In April and May 2021, we conducted a co-firing test of coal and black pellets at the Chiba Complex. The test was undertaken with an eye to reducing GHGs and establishing incineration technologies for circulating fluidized bed boilers. For the co-firing test conducted employing boilers at the Chiba Complex, we used around 1,000 tons of black pellets shipped from our overseas demonstration manufacturing site and then unloaded and stored domestically. Going forward, we will evaluate the test results, identify issues pertaining to the launch of full-scale operations, and accelerate initiatives aimed at fostering internal cooperation to reduce the Company’s GHG emissions as well as the eventual sale of related technologies to other companies.
On June 6, 2019, the “ASEAN Bioenergy and Bioeconomy Conference 2019” hosted by Kasetsart University was held in Bangkok. Invited by the university, our engineer from Coal Coal Business Department gave a lecture on the technology of semi-carbonizing wood pellets (black pellet). Currently, Idemitsu Kosan is working on black pellets production in Thailand.
During the event, we had an active opinions exchange with local biomass-related companies, and many participants expressed their expectations to Idemitsu as we presented our plan regarding biomass commercialization.
